A Special Cultural Project is Taking Shape

We are excited to share a wonderful project that is bringing culture, creativity and community together at our school as part of NAIDOC Week.

 

With the guidance and support of our Menang Elder, Fiona Simpson, and through our HASS/Cultural Responsiveness Committee, PALS funding is being used to transform the pathway leading to the basketball courts into a welcoming cultural space.

The project will feature a mosaic pathway inspired by NAIDOC themes, a Noongar Six Seasons garden, and a shared community seating area for students, families and visitors.

Students are already hard at work creating mosaic tiles that will become part of this lasting artwork.

Each classroom has been allocated a Noongar bird that is significant to the Denmark area:

• Unit 2 – boodalang (Pelican)

• Unit 3 – waalitj (Eagle)

• Unit 4 – maali (Swan)

• Unit 5 – kaa kaa (Kookaburra)

• Room 1 – manatj (White Cockatoo)

• Room 2 – ngarkal (Seagull)

• Room 3 – koolbardi (Magpie)

• Room 4 – yerderap (Duck)

• Room 6 – wetj (Emu)

• Room 7 – karak (Red-tailed Black Cockatoo)

• Room 12 – djakal ngakal (Galah)

• Room 13 – ngalkininy (White Ibis)

• Room 14 – kambany (Tawny Frogmouth)

• Room 15 – djidi djidi (Willy Wagtail)

• Room 16 – koolyabarak (Mudlark)

• Room 22 – donkarak (Wattlebird)

• Room 23 – ngoolyak (White-tailed Black Cockatoo)

• Room 24 – doonart (Parrot)

• Room 25 – bardinar (Rosella)

• Art – kooba (Red Robin)
